My son got a mobile phone contract at just 18 he now can,t afford the payments?

our son who lives at home , at college, no job(at present), managed to get a mobile contract from orange even though we said he would not be able to get one. why on earth did they let him have one its 30 a mth for 3 years and now hes in the ****!!!
